Yes, Hell is freezing over…

September 13, 2012

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… yes, Disneyworld guests (well, not boys and girls) will soon be able to buy select alcoholic beverages in the Magic Kingdom. You read that right: booze in MK!

Pam Brandon reported in a post on the Disney Parks Blog about some details on the upcoming Be Our Guest restaurant in the new Fantasyland expansion.

After a few comments on the physical aspects of the venue and the food side of the story, she casually notes that: “And just for dinner, select wines and beers will be offered that complement the French-inspired cuisine.”

Following this nonchalant bombshell are a few quotes from the Beverage Director of the parks:

“As part of the overall theming, we wanted to offer wine that enhances the guest experience and complements the French-inspired cuisine,” says Stuart McGuire, Beverage Director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “The wines focus primarily on France’s famous wine-growing regions, including Champagne, Alsace, Loire, Rhone, Burgundy and Bordeaux.

“We’ll also offer the leading French beer, Kronenbourg 1664,” says McGuire. “And, staying in the general region, we’ll also offer Belgian beers.”

Wow… I never thought I’d see this day (see Cocktails? In the Magic Kingdom? Could it be true??? as an example)…

So will other sit-downs in the Magic Kingdom follow suit and wind up serving adult beverages with dinner? Could you eventually have a drink at Pecos Bills? Is this the slippery slope that could lead to beverage carts with Stella on draft??? Be still my heart…

What do you think???

This is totally the first step in introducing beer/wine in the MK to all of the table service restaurants…they can play it off all they want that it serves the purpose to enhance the experience, but we all know it’s really about the $$$ that alcohol sales bring in…personally I’m neutral on the issue…yeah it’d be nice if it remained dry but doesn’t bother me if they sell it

Vance, if adding adult beverages gets us better food at MK, I’m all for it. “Fine dining” establishments all use the profit from alcohol sales to prop up the more expensive food costs… let’s sell some nice wine in Tony’s (and get the folks from Tutto Italia to run it…) and get something great to eat there… that being said, with all my joking about booze, I’m sorta mixed about how I feel about this…

Truthfully this idea saddens me. MK is the most kid friendly park and I don’t want to see it go down that road. I once witnessed a drunken brawl at Epcot and while I’ve no idea how frequently such an occurance happens, such behavior at MK would be awful to behold.

Leave the adult beverages out of MK. A refreshing Lapu Lapu is only a short monorail ride away at the Tambo Lounge.

  3. I agree with the placement in the restaurant, my hope is that is that it is not expanded further.

Lots of drunk people at MK already, they just don’t buy it there. They either sneak it in, which we saw on the extra Disney day on Feb 29th in excess! Or they just drink as much as they want before getting to MK. It is only a short walk to grab a drink. We have walked from CR with our drinks in hand over to MK. I don’t think we should be able to walk around with a drink, or a to go cup or get a drink at a stand as much as I like that! But I do like the idea of getting one with my dinner.
